A Winter’s Day on Frozen Pond

Ashen skies of pale hue

Canopy the hoary dew,

Surrounding water frozen fast

By winter’s frigid, Arctic blast.

Yet near a pool of water, still,

Gather fowl with beak and bill.

Here the hunter and the prey

Pause to dream of sun-drenched days.

Then hunger stirs the eagle’s breast.

Peace is shattered! Gone is rest!

With frenzied flaps the chase is on!

Tis a winter’s day on frozen pond.
